Behind Camera: The Sylvee

Madison is home to a number of concert venues, including The Sylvee. With it’s massive open main-floor, tri-level of seating, and VIP suits, many of likened the space to our very own first Chicago-style venue.

Styled with chain link, punk rock graphics and all, this venue draws acts that would otherwise breeze past our city. To get the full experience, you have to see a show. But for our purposes, this is a behind the scenes look of what you can expect if you are producing or working an event at the Sylvee. Load in is a snap, everything was thoughtfully designed for easy load in and out. This massive loading doc dwarfs even our high-top van.

Access ramps finish right at stage level. No confusing hallway maze or clunky elevator system to bang gear around in. Its simple, smart, the way it should be. Most crews will find themselves loading amps, set pieces, video walls, etc on stage left. Those working front of house will find themselves in the right place after a short elevator ride.

The Hinckley Productions crew recently worked at this venue for a live stream of a speaking event. We brought along our base station which includes the video switcher, sound mixing and video encoding in other words, everything you need to make an on-location broadcast possible.

We set up right next to the house sound board, receiving all audio sources needed for broadcast. The Sylvee set us up with everything else we needed including power drops and a screaming internet connection.

We also use in house patch panels which allowed us to route video via SDI as well as XLR on either side of stage, with the panel front of house. This saves us hundreds of feed of cable runs. Simple technology, but not something you see properly maintained or in existence at all in most Madison venues.

Back on stage, this huge area provided for plenty of room for two 16’ screens, a set styling pieces, and our speaker reference monitor.

Whether our on tour with a national act or just headed there to catch a show for yourself, you’ll enjoy all the thoughtful design that went into this venue to make a smooth experience.
